  • At birth:
    • Newborns have dark fur, rounded heads, and are unable to regulate their own body temperature.
    • Pups are blind with closed eyes, deaf with small ears, and a "pugged" nose with little to no sense of smell. However, whelps have an excellent sense of taste and touch.
    • Young can only slow crawl, relying mainly with their front legs while balance develops.
    • Communication within the brood is limited to sucking and licking. Infants can also whine and yelp.
    • The litter will feed four or five times a day, for periods of three to five minutes.

    • Milk incisors are present at fifteen days. The young can eat small pieces of regurgitated meat.
    • The brood will begin to stand and walk. One's sense of balance is fairly well established at this point.
    • Vocalizations begin to vary and may include growls, whimpers and squeaks.
    • It is during this time parents teach their children how to howl. First attempts are high pitched failures.

  • Socialization Period
  • From twenty four to seventy seven days.
  • At three weeks:
    • The brood begins to appear outside of the den and play near the entrance.
    • Ears begin to raise around twenty seven days and hearing improves significantly.

    • With canines and premolar teeth present, meat begins to more heavily influence the litter's diet.
  • At four weeks:
    • Growth of adult hair shows around a pup's nose and eyes.
    • At this age, pups have a disproportionately large head and feet.
    • The litter's once short, high-pitched howls are gaining strength.
    • A mother may go off for hours on end to hunt, leaving the father to protect their litter.
    • Dominance and play fighting within the brood begins.
  • At five weeks:
    • The mother starts the gradual process of weaning her pups.
    • The young can follow adults up to a mile away from their den.

  • Juvenile Period
  • Twelve weeks from sexual maturity.
  • At eight to ten weeks:
    • Parents abandon their den and move the litter to a rendezvous site.
    • With weaning complete, pups feed on food provided by their family or pack.
    • Adult guard hair becomes apparent on the young's body.
  • At ten to sixteen weeks:
    • Eyes gradually change from blue to gold, their adult color.
    • Children follow adults on short hunting trips and return to the den by themselves.

  • Period of Rapid Growth
